Nganmarriyanga

Orange Sky Australia is committed to providing access to clean clothes, warm showers and genuine, non-judgemental conversation for all Australians. In remote communities, access to laundry services can be limited and cost prohibitive. To support this, Orange Sky works alongside remote communities to build impact through free laundry, local employment and local partnerships.

Nganmarriyanga is a remote community founded by the Wodidj family, located 40 minutes drive away from Wadeye.

Orange Sky established a laundry service in Nganmarriyanga in December 2023 to support local residents. Our Nganmarriyanga service provides residents access to free laundry and a safe space for yarning.

An enormous thank you to our service partner Thamarrurr Development Corporation, for supporting and helping to deliver this serivce. We are grateful to the local team and Nganmarriyanga residents trusting us with their laundry and ongoing yarns.

We acknowledge and thank Nganmarriyanga Traditional Custodians for welcoming Orange Sky into their community.

Rockhampton

Our weekly impact in Rockhampton

Orange Sky celebrated the launch of their 40th location by introducing a laundry pod to the community of Rockhampton in February 2024.

Data from the 2021 Census has revealed that homelessness in Rockhampton has increased by 13.8% (ABS, 2021). The increase in homelessness resulted in heightened demand on support services in the region, being one of the key reasons we set our sights on Rockhampton, aiming to help support the growing number of locals experiencing hardship.

Usually delivering our services via iconic bright orange mobile vans, the Rockhampton community welcomed a different laundry asset type, an original invention by our innovation team – a ‘Laundry Pod’.

The Orange Sky laundry pod will be operated out of The Salvation Army,  a space that brings together community groups and service providers, offering a unique opportunity to work collaboratively and impact the Rockhampton community, enabling access to multiple resources and services in one place.

Bundaberg

Our weekly impact in Bundaberg

Orange Sky celebrated the launch of their 38th service by introducing a laundry pod to the community of Bundaberg in October 2023.

Data from the 2021 Census has revealed that homelessness in Bundaberg has increased by 17.9% since 2016 (ABS, 2021). The increase in homelessness resulted in heightened demand on support services in the region, being one of the key reasons we set our sights on Bundaberg, aiming to help support the growing number of locals experiencing hardship.

Usually delivering our services via iconic bright orange mobile vans, the Bundaberg community welcomed a different laundry asset type, an original invention by our innovation team – a ‘Laundry Pod’.

Through the support of the Minderoo Foundation providing partial funding for the service, and working hand-in-hand with the Angel’s Community Group and the local Bundaberg community, we are excited to launch a new Orange Sky service to support our friends doing it tough in the region.

The Orange Sky laundry pod is stationed at the Angels Mini Mart, a social enterprise run by Angels Community Group, a space that brings together community groups and service providers, offering a unique opportunity to work collaboratively and impact the Bundaberg community, enabling access to multiple resources and services in one place.

In remote communities, access to laundry services can be limited and cost prohibitive. To support this, Orange Sky works alongside remote communities to build impact through free laundry, local employment and local partnerships.

Our weekly impact in Doomadgee

Orange Sky launched our fourteenth remote service in Doomadgee, QLD in October 2023.

Home to the Waanyi and Gangalidda people, Doomadgee is located in far North Queensland, situated about 140 kilometres from the Northern Territory border.

From our research and through conversations with local groups and stakeholders, we have learnt there is a strain on available resources within the community – specifically the need and demand for washing facilities big enough to fit blankets and bedding.

Working hand-in-hand with Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council, North West Hospital and Health Service and the community, we are excited to launch an Orange Sky service in Doomadgee.

Through our bright orange solar-powered remote laundry vehicle, fitted with three washing machines and three dryers, this partnership offers local employment opportunities, but most importantly, a safe space for people to connect and do their washing to ensure much needed access to essential hygiene infrastructure in the region.

Our weekly impact in Brisbane

Brisbane is always a hub of activity, as it’s the location of Orange Sky’s headquarters and workshop, where all our vans are constructed.

There are currently two vans based in Brisbane – Marcia and Laurie. Marcia, our laundry van, named after Tropical Cyclone Marcia, which devastated communities in Central Queensland in February 2015. Orange Sky was able to provide free mobile laundry services to people in need during this time, which prompted the Queensland Government to work with Orange Sky to put another van on the road. Marcia has since helped residents in the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie, which hit the coast of North Queensland in March 2017.

Brisbane is also the proud owner of our hybrid shower/laundry van, Laurie, whose name came from a unique experience shared by the Minister of Housing and Public Works, Mick de Brenni. Mr de Brenni had a conversation with a man sleeping rough, named Lawrence, who mentioned that all he need in that moment was not a place to sleep, or food, but rather just a clean pair of underwear. This helped catalyse the Queensland Government’s support for Orange Sky’s Australia, which provides laundry services in Queensland, and enabled us to introduce a shower van to help restore dignity to friends like Lawrence. The van is proudly named Laurie, to remind us of the important work we do.

Marcia and Laurie hit the streets of Brisbane 7 days a week to service the needs of the community and help positively connect people who are experiencing homelessness.

In remote communities, access to laundry services can be limited and cost prohibitive. To support this, Orange Sky works alongside remote communities to build impact through free laundry, local employment and local partnerships.

Our weekly impact in Yuendumu

Orange Sky launched our twelfth remote service in Yuendumu, NT in February 2023.

Yuendumu sits on the edge of the Tanami Desert, approximately 350 kilometers north west of Alice Springs. Home to the Warlpiri people, Yuendumu is well known for its vibrancy, and rich history of culture and art.

Yuendumu has a fluctuating population of approximately 1,000 people, and it is estimated that 44% reside in inadequate or overcrowded housing. Access to health hardware is a significant challenge in this remote community.

In partnership with the Central Desert Regional Council, Orange Sky provided one of our bright orange solar-powered remote laundry vehicles, fitted with three washing machines and three dryers. This not only offers locals a safe space to connect and do their washing – for free – but also employment opportunities to become part of the team to operate the laundry service.

We are thrilled Orange Sky can play our part in supporting the mob in Yuendumu.
