Orange Sky’s Darwin service launched in July 2018, providing laundry, showers and conversation to people experiencing homelessness.

‘Betsy’ was warmly welcomed into the Darwin community and many new friends have been excited to use the shower and laundry facilities. The rates of homelessness in the Northern Territory are more than 12 times the national average, so we know that our service will play an important role in helping to positively connect people doing it tough. Like all of our services, we hope to have the biggest impact in Darwin through genuine and non-judgemental conversation that take place on our six orange chairs.

Orange Sky Australia has two vans located in Sydney, which service the needs of the community through free laundry, showers and conversation.

Sydney’s shower van, Poppy, has a special story that started in one young girls genuine belief that “homelessness is unfair”. On her normal route, Poppy Littlewood would see the same man, experiencing homelessness, sat alone in the park. Much like our Orange Sky family, she knew she needed to help. At first she brought food, but her ideas quickly grew. She wanted to make care packs – not just for her friend in the park, but for friends all around Australia. Poppy, with the support of her friends, family and community, has now made thousands of care packs in special bags with a proud logo. Our van in Sydney was named to honour her work and to show that no matter how young, we can always help our friends in need.

Orange Sky Australia’s Sydney vans carry on this work with our friends on the street by providing free mobile laundry and showers. We positively connect communities through the power of non-judgemental conversations with our friends while out on shift.

Lockhart River is a remote Aboriginal community in Far North Queensland near the world-heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, with untouched beaches and amazing fishing.

Is is also the location of Orange Sky’s first remote laundry service; a custom-built vehicle that is unique from any other in the fleet. Three washing machines and three dryers were fitted to an ex-defence truck, before it set off on the long drive to one of the most northern communities in Australia. ‘Phytham,’ which was named by the community, is adorned with the artworks of three local artists; Silas Hobson, Fiona Omeenyo and Rosella Namok.

Orange Sky was able to work with locals to support community driven ideas, aimed at improving hygiene standards and providing the opportunity for a yarn. It has been a privilege to be welcomed into the Lockhart River community and brought along the journey towards improved health outcomes. As with all our services, Orange Sky’s biggest impact has taken place on the six orange chairs that are set up at shift locations across this small community.

Orange Sky Australia was proud to launch its laundry van, ‘Mikey,’ in April 2017, running services all the way from Caloundra to Noosa.

Prior to Mikey, volunteers on the Sunshine Coast were custodians of our first every laundry van, ‘Sudsy,’ which started operating exactly one year earlier.

A quick trip to the Sunshine Coast will show you beautiful beaches, bustling towns, and of course, a little orange van providing laundry services to our friends on the street. Like many of our vans, Mikey holds a special place in the Orange Sky fleet and family. Our generous sponsors named the van after their late son, in hopes to carry out his charitable work. Through Mikey, our volunteers are able to positively connect the communities through non-judgemental conversations, inspiring genuine friendships with those that use our services.

Brisbane is always a hub of activity, as it’s the location of Orange Sky’s headquarters and workshop, where all our vans are constructed.

There are currently three vans based in Brisbane. ‘Marcia’ (laundry) and ‘Laurie’ (showers) were both funded by the Queensland Government’s Dignity First Fund. Marcia was named after Tropical Cyclone Marcia, which devastated communities in Central Queensland in February 2015. Orange Sky was able to provide free mobile laundry services to people in need during this time, which prompted the Queensland Government to work with Orange Sky to put another van on the road. Marcia has since helped residents in the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie, which hit the coast of North Queensland in March 2017.

Brisbane is also the proud owner of our shower van, Laurie, whose name came from a unique experience shared by the Minister of Housing and Public Works, Mick de Brenni. Mr de Brenni had a conversation with a man sleeping rough, named Lawrence, who mentioned that all he need in that moment was not a place to sleep, or food, but rather just a clean pair of underwear. This helped catalyse Mr de Brenni’s support for Orange Sky Australia, which provides laundry services, now paired with a warm shower to help restore dignity to friends like Lawrence. The van is proudly named Laurie, to remind us of the important work we do.

Marcia and Laurie work alongside our original Brisbane laundry van, ‘Cathy’, to service the needs of the community and help positively connect people who are experiencing homelessness.

Our Melbourne service brings together people from all walks of life. Orange Sky has two vans in Melbourne and one in Melbourne South East

The Melbourne laundry van, ‘Jelley Baby,’ was launched in Orange Sky’s first year of operation and is still one of our busiest services in Australia. Our first ever shower van was also launched in Melbourne in December 2016, proudly supported by the Shine On Foundation. ‘Monty’ helps raise hygiene standards, but also establishes a place for our volunteers to engage in conversations and form friendships with those after a hot shower.

Monty and Jelley Baby work alongside each other to help our friends on the street by providing free mobile laundry and shower services. We positively connect communities through the power of non-judgemental conversations with our friends while out on shift.

Orange Sky Australia launched its fifth hybrid van in Western Sydney in June, providing free laundry, showers and conversation to people doing it tough.

The van was fully funded by Sydney Water, along with three years of operational costs. The van ‘Busby’ is named after Busby’s Bore, Sydney’s second water source, and was chosen by Sydney Water customers in an online poll.

The rate of homelessness in New South Wales rose by 27 percent since the 2011 census, which previously sat at 28,000 people. The Greater Western Sydney region is a constantly growing population, housing a 35 percent immigrant population coming from over 170 countries.

Orange Sky Australia will now be able to provide washing and drying, a warm shower, and of course, genuine non judgemental conversation to our friends doing it tough. Our vans wouldn’t be successful without the support of our volunteers – if you are interested in joining the Orange Sky team and helping to start genuine conversations, please register now!

Orange Sky’s Perth South service has been operating since June 2017, helping to positively connect our friends through genuine and non-judgemental conversation.

Although a smaller service than Perth North, ‘Lottie’ is a hybrid van and helps to service the needs of the community through laundry and shower services.

One of the biggest advocates of our service in the south is our friend, George . He is one of our most regular faces on shift – sometimes he comes to do his laundry, other times for a hot shower, but always for the conversation. He told us that the weekly conversation and banter with Orange Sky volunteers helped him to feel connected: “When you’ve been homeless for such a long time, it’s the small things that can give you a little bit more hope.”
