“To me, it was just a load of washing…”
“…but to her, it was everything she had.”
‘The F Word’ Podcast Series, Episode 4<
The realisation that many friends visiting Orange Sky vans are trusting some of their only possessions to strangers, to protect, clean and return their clothes, can be an incredible moment of perspective and gratitude for new volunteers.
In this episode of The F word, Nic and Lucas hear the stories of friendships forged between volunteers and Aussies doing it tough, and the many realisations and benefits experienced by a range of long and short-term supporters of Orange Sky across Australia.
We’re proud to do everything possible to honour that trust and ensure that at the end of a shift, we’re a little less of a stranger.
“Quite often you don’t need to say anything. You just need to be there and listen, and for a lot of people that gives them a sense of visibility that they otherwise don’t have.”
“A lot of people make very simple assumptions about addiction and mental health, they see the stereotypical person in the movies, or something, what an addict looks like or what someone with a mental illness looks like, what the family looks like. I personally think that’s so far from the truth.”
“The journey I’m starting on shift, I keep hitting these walls of judgement where I have to think about something differently, and wind it back.”
On shift, every conversation bridges to a deeper understanding of how a person’s story is always more than what meets the eye.
