They Are Not Just People, They Are Our Friends
‘The F Word’ Podcast Series, Episode 6
This episode of The F Word explores the real-life impact of sudden change, and examines the fine line between stability and crisis.
Homelessness, it’s closer than you think
What’s the difference between yourself, and someone doing it tough? It’s likely a lot less than you think. Stereotypes can make us believe harmful narratives around how individuals come to experience homelessness, and even dehumanise their situation.
“People always… they think homeless people are trouble […] ‘Ah, look at them, get a job’, yeah ‘they’re lazy, living on the Dole or something.’
But they never try to think ‘Ok, why is this person homeless? What happened to you? There must be a reason.”
“Homeless people, like, it’s not a hobby. It’s not a choice. Everyone has a story.”

Tune in as ‘Episode 6: They are not just people, they are our friends’ delves into stories from friends experiencing homelessness, all from vastly different backgrounds and circumstances.
Exploring Friendship, Family and Connection
Orange Sky offers connection and authenticity, a listening ear, empathy. Many volunteers form incredibly strong bonds with friends on shifts, and form a regular schedule so friends know they’ll always find a spare orange chair next to their mate in an orange shirt.
“In many ways, I think the volunteers get more out of this than friends. Being able to catch up with people who can help you understand what a good life is. It’s just an absolute joy to come and spend some time.”
“These people, I’ve known them for ten years now. It’s such a good feeling to know that they do so much for the community and they’re not just people we get help from… they’re our friends.”
