Orange Sky’s core service is providing access to free laundry and shower facilities to people doing it tough. But it’s connection through genuine, non-judgemental conversations that is the heart of our service.
Through our service, we create a safe and welcoming space where volunteers and people form meaningful connections. By providing a listening ear, engaging in genuine conversations, shared experiences and acts of kindness, Orange Sky aims to alleviate loneliness and foster a sense of belonging for people who may feel disconnected or isolated in their community.
The Orange Sky service is a consistent service, to encourage regular engagement between volunteers and people doing it tough. The connection that helps to strengthen and positively connect communities one conversation at a time.
According to the Australian Institude of Health and Welfare, in 2022 almost 1 in 7 (15%) Australians (18% of males and 12% of females) were experiencing social isolation. Within the same study, it was found that feelings of loneliness were experienced by 1 in 6 Australians.
Social isolation and loneliness can happen to anyone. Whether they are housed or experiencing homelessness, living in a big city or a small town. As humans, we crave social interaction and connection within our communities.
At Orange Sky, whilst our practical service of providing access to clean laundry and warm showers is important, the connection through conversation that happens is the heart of what we do. Anyone is welcome to visit an Orange Sky shift, even if they don’t want or need to engage with our washing and shower service, they are welcome to come along and have a chat.
The users of our service aren’t the only beneficiary of community connection. Volunteers of Orange Sky engage with friends doing it tough (people experiencing homelessness and hardship), other wrap around services that we partner with, staff of Orange Sky and each other, fostering genuine relationships.
Engaging in volunteer work and maintaining active memberships of sporting or community organisations are also associated with reduced social isolation (Flood 2005).
In a landscape where social isolation and loneliness touch the lives of many, Orange Sky provides a sense of belonging and community. Beyond the vital services of clean laundry and warm showers, it’s the genuine conversations that truly define our purpose.<
