Geelong

Our weekly impact in Geelong

Orange Sky’s Geelong service kicked off in March 2018 and was Victoria’s first regional location outside of Melbourne.

The van provides free laundry and genuine conversation to people experiencing homelessness. In a fantastic example of community coming together, Orange Sky’s Geelong van was supported by the Geelong Grammar School through the fundraising efforts of students. The remainder of funds was donated by the Muir family, and the van was named ‘Bluey’ to celebrate the school’s efforts. Geelong Grammar School student Matilda von Bibra said she felt there was a need for Orange Sky’s service in the community.

“The human connection through even just a simple conversation can be enough to brighten someone’s day and make their life just that little bit easier to live. Orange Sky channels this mentality to positively impact so many people in their everyday lives, and it’s beautiful to think that it all starts with the simple act of talking.”

Our team in Geelong is proud to work alongside local service providers to help positively connect our friends in need through clean clothes and conversation.

Wollongong

Our impact in Wollongong

Orange Sky Australia launched its mobile laundry van for the Illawarra Region, helping to bring free laundry and conversation to people in need.

‘Daisy’ was first launched in November 2016 thanks to two very special community members, Bruce and Val McDiarmid. They saw a chance to help the community they loved and were able to donate enough money to purchase an Orange Sky van. Our co-founders first met with the community in Wollongong when they were driving Daisy's brother van, Splasher, to Tasmania. The boys were inspired by the community's eagerness to get involved and help provide laundry and conversation to those doing it tough.

Newcastle

Our impact in Newcastle

Newcastle’s van, ‘Hunter,’ was first launched in August 2017 to help our friends doing it tough.

Hunter hit the streets running, and within the first week, had established 12 shifts across six days alongside the Development and Relief Agency (DARA) van. DARA, who kindly funded the Newcastle van, offers hospitality and support to our friends to better connect the community.

There are more than 28,000 people experiencing homelessness in New South Wales, and alongside DARA and the Maitland Catholic Diocese, Orange Sky Australia is able to offer essential services to our friends in need across Newcastle. Hunter was aptly named after the main street in Newcastle, and will continue to proudly operate with the support of the community.

Hobart

Our impact in Hobart

Volunteers from around Australia helped to launch Hobart’s van, ‘Splasher,’ in July 2016.

Splasher was launched on a particularly cold day in July. Our volunteers huddled around the dryer vents, ready to meet some new friends for a chat. Splasher, located in Hobart, has a unique story behind its launch as it was our first service where we had limited volunteers in nearby locations to help get the service up and running. In an amazing demonstration of the Orange Sky community and values, we had volunteers from the Sunshine Coast and Canberra raise their hands to be part of this massive undertaking. In doing so, Splasher became a van that symbolised the ongoing community across our vans, locations, volunteers, and of course, our friends.

Mid-North Coast

Our weekly impact in Mid North Coast

Orange Sky has been providing essential services to our friends doing it tough in the Mid North Coast region since October 2017.

The launch of the service was made possible by the fundraising efforts of local organisation, Make a Difference Port Macquarie. We are now operating one pod in each of the following locations; Kempsey Neighbourhood Centre, Laurieton United Services Club, Taree Manning Uniting Church, Wingham Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Currently ‘Rosco’ the truck is servicing the Port Macquarie community, and is based at St Thomas Anglican Church. With the ongoing support of volunteers, Orange Sky plays an important role in supporting people experiencing homelessness or doing it tough through free laundry and genuine, non-judgemental conversation.

We are looking for volunteers to join the Mid North Coast team! If you love a chat and have a few hours spare a fortnight, why not get involved? Sign up here

Canberra

Our weekly impact in Canberra

Orange Sky has been operating in Canberra since April 2016.

Over the past few years, Canberra has built up a thriving volunteer community that provides support to our friends doing it tough through free laundry and genuine conversation. Volunteers have built up some incredible relationships with friends, whose lives have been impacted by a positive connection. Our friend Thomas, featured in the video below, wonderfully articulates how services like Orange Sky can help to provide dignity and hope to people in need.

We have amazing volunteers all across the country, but our Gold Coast volunteers did some pretty special work over the 2018 Commonwealth Games. They worked tirelessly to maintain as many services as possible during the Games and ensure that our friends had access to clean laundry and conversation. The Minister for Housing and Public Works, Hon Mick de Brenni presented Orange Sky with a certificate of appreciation for our efforts along with a framed artwork from the same artist who designed the medals; Delvene Cockatoo-Collins.

Townsville

Our impact in Townsville

Orange Sky set up its service in Townsville in March 2018, providing clean clothes, warm showers and genuine conversations for our friends doing it tough.

Townsville’s van was named after the Managing Director of Richard Jay, who has played a significant role here at Orange Sky. Carolyn was the first person to support our co-founders’ passion and gifted our young entrepreneurial founders their first washing machine and dryer (and then a few after that as they broke machines in the process of fitting them into vans). Rather than hearing impossible, Carolyn heard innovative.

Orange Sky Australia’s Townsville van helps our friends on the street by providing free mobile laundry services. We positively connect communities through the power of non-judgemental conversation with our friends while out on shift.

Our Mackay service has been running since October 2017

Orange Sky is always looking for innovative ways to increase our impact and help more people doing it tough. That's why we are super excited to announce the launch of our free laundry pods with the first trial to start in Mackay towards the end of May/ start of June.

The pod houses three washers and three dryers that can be locked up and opened by our amazing volunteers. This new innovation allows us to reach more areas and ensure that as many friends as possible have access to free laundry and, most importantly, genuine and non-judgemental conversations with our amazing volunteers.

More news to come soon...
